A tribute to the 29 men who died November 10, 1975, aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. —- Announcer (0:04): An air and sea search is continuing for possible survivors of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a 729 foot ore carrier, which apparently broke apart and sunk last night on Lake Superior. The ship and its 29-man crew vanished in a storm with 80 mile-an-hour winds and wave heights up to 25 feet. All that has been found is an oil slick and some debris. — song begins at 0:17 — Radio Transmission (3:11): “We last had contact with ‘em, the mate had talked to him … at about 10 minutes after 7, 19:10, and he said he was going along fine and no problem.” — Radio Transmission (3:21): “But it looks from the information that we have that it’s, uh, fairly certain that the, uh, Fitzgerald went down.” — Radio Transmission (4:04): “Uh, no, I didn’t have him, uh, visually, I had him on radar; he was, uh, exactly 10 miles ahead of us. I asked him how he was making out with his problems and he said he was holding his own, but I, uh, lost contact after that.” —- Lyrics: The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they called “Gitche Gumee” The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, that big ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the Gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side coming back …

This is a video link to help you prepare for a visit to fisheries museums with the on screen links both on the video and pull down menu. As there are a great deal of links it may need you to pause the video to see all that are available.
This song is for inbred homos.
@56cindylou This is the best Edmund tribute I’ve seen on the tube. I am working on one myself with acoustic and vocal, with a drop D tuning. Sounds great so far, and I’ve actually added a very active solo at the point of the storm. Very dramatic. It will take a while, but I should be able to post it soon unless I get sidetracked by another project. I’ve always admired Gordon Lightfoot and got to see him in late 70′s. Awesome show.
i love, love, love this ballad…it has so much meaning to the people who have lost their husbands, dads, uncles and the cold waters of the north….my uncle was a sailor and my dad was in WW2…i lived in Eau Claire, not far from Milwaukee

thanks for producing this. it is a reminder that this is not just a beautiful piece of art by Mr. Lightfoot. it’s a tribute to the men who lost their lives in a tragedy at sea.
Growing up in Superior, where the Fitzgerald last departed, this song always gives me chills. Very eerie. I really like the radio transmissions that have been added. Well done.
We desperately need a song like this commemorating those who were killed by the terrorists on the USS Liberty.
and just think this happend on a lake. people go out in the ocean to get fish or crabs and shit
i was only 10 years old when the fitzgerald went down.what a tragedy.i am still in awe of this song.thank you soooooooo much mister lightfoot
Someone did a great job putting this together. Did you see the window visor smashed up against the glass. Damn they got hit hard. They said 90 plus winds? Monster waves crashing on top of it. People were scared to even go out and look for survivors.
Sobering. Shows how dangerous even in the modern day sailing can be.
I have a very good point of what this is about thanks for the great video.
Excellent video and accompanying information! I also appreciate seeing the lyrics. Thanks for posting.
